Crochet Bucket Hat Pattern (Step by Step)


PART 1: THE CROWN (Top of Hat)

We’ll start the Bucket Hat from the top and work in rounds.

Round 1: mr, 1ch, 10hdc, sl st

First, make a magic ring.

Make one chain.

Make 10 half double crochet stitch into the ring.

[1hdc = yarn over, insert hook into the ring, yarn over and pull yarn; 3 loops on the hook. yarn over and pull through all the 3 loops.]

Pull the short yarn tail tight to close the ring.

Slip stitch on top of the first half double crochet to join the round.

Total 10 stitches in Round 1.

Important Tips: Always count your stitches in every round.


Round 2: 1ch, 2hdc, sl st

First, make one chain.

Now, increase in every stitch: 2 half double crochet in each stitch around.

"slip stitch at the first stitch."

"total twenty stitches in round two."


Round 3: 1ch, (1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

In Round 3, start with 1 chain.

Now, work 1 half double crochet.

Then, 2 half double crochet in next stitch.

REPEAT around.

Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.

Total 30 stitches in Round 3.


Round 4: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

To start Round 4, start with chain 1.

Now, make 1 half double crochet.

Again, 1 half double crochet in next stitch.

Now, 2 half double crochet in next stitch.

REPEAT around.

Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.


MISTAKE: ??? 39 stitches??? - check it again!

It must be total 40 stitches.
39 stitches: - checking third time!!!
Where did I do the mistake? - check all the stitch pattern in this round.
Yes, I found the the mistake. In one stitch I did only 1 half double crochet instead of two half double crochet; mark that stitch.
Do - open all stitches up to that mark.
Again, crochet stitches according to the pattern. IMPORTANT TIP: So, always count your stitches at the end of each round.

Now, slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.
Total 40 stitches in Round 4.

Round 5: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

To start Round 5, make chain 1.

Then, make 1 half double crochet.
Again, 1 half double crochet in the next stitch.
Make 1 more half double crochet in the next stitch.
Now, 2 half double crochet in the next stitch.

REPEAT this pattern around.

Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.
Total 50 stitches in Round 5.


Round 6: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

To start the Round 6, make 1 chain.
Make 4 half double crochet in next 4 stitches.
Now, make 2 half double crochet in the next stitch.
REPEAT this pattern around.
Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.
Total 60 stitches in Round 6.


Round 7: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

For Round 7, start with chain 1.

Now make 5 half double crochet in next 5 stitches.
Now make 2 half double crochet in the next stitch.
REPEAT this pattern around.
Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.
Total 70 stitches in Round 7.

Now, we will check the measurement once.
Around 6.5 inch in diameter.
For a medium size hat, we will do one more round.


Round 8: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

To start Round 8, start with 1 chain.

Now, make 6 half double crochet in next 6 stitches.
Make 2 half double crochet in next stitch.
REPEAT, this pattern around.
Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.
Total 80 stitches in Round 8.


Pause here!

Now, we will measure the diameter of the crown. Your circle should measure about 7–7.5 inches wide in diameter. This is the top of the hat. If you want a larger hat, add more increase rounds as your desired size.

The diameter of this hat is around 7.25 inches.


🧵 PART 2: THE BODY (Sides of Hat)

Rounds 9 - 21: 1ch, 1hdc in each st, sl st


Now we will make the body of our bucket hat.
Also, we will stop increasing.
Just we will make 1 half double crochet in each stitch around.

For Rounds 9–21:
Make 1 chain.
Now, half double crochet in each stitch around.
No increases. Keep going until the hat measures your desired size from the center. This creates the bucket shape.
Now, slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round 9.

Important Tips: Do not crochet extra stitches. Otherwise this will create extra stitches, which we do not want.

Total 80 stitches. no increases.

Now, REPEAT Round 9 for rest of the body.

At Round 21, you can see the bucket shape of our hat.
Now, it is around 9.25 inches from top center to bottom.


🌊 PART 3: THE BRIM

Rounds 22: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

Now, we will make the brim from Round 22 to Round 25.

This will add flare to the hat.

For Round 22, make 1 chain.

Now, make 4 half double crochet in next 4 stitches.

In the next stitch, make 2 half double crochet in the same stitch.

REPEAT this pattern around.

Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.

Total 96 stitches in Round 22.


Round 23: 1ch, 1hdc in each st, sl st

For Round 23, start with 1 chain.

And 1 half double crochet in each stitch around. There is no increase in this round.

Slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.

Total 96 stitches in Round 23.


Round 24: 1ch, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc), sl st

For Round 24, first make 1 chain.

Make 5 half double crochet in next 5 stitches.

Now, 2 half double crochet in next stitch.

REPEAT this pattern around.

Now, slip stitch at the first stitch to join the round.

Total 112 stitches in Round 24.


Round 25: 1ch, 1hdc in each st, sl st

For Round 25, make 1 chain.

Now, make 1 half double crochet in each stitch around. There is no increases in stitches.

Total 112 stitches in Round 25.


Round 26: 1 sl st in each st around

Make slip stitch in each stitch around.

This round is for professional finish look of the handmade bucket hat.

To complete the bucket hat:

First cut the yarn leaving a small tail. [best to follow the video tutorial]

Insert the needle in both loops of the first stitch of the round with the help of a yarn needle.

Now, insert the needle in the back loop of the last stitch of the round.

Now, fasten off and weave in extra yarns.

Shape the brim gently with your hands.
